iPad for Christmas

I've been a good boy all year, and I'm going to be getting an iPad for Christmas! Could some of you suggest your favorite chess apps? Also, do any of you use your iPads to access Chess.com or the ICC? And what do do there: play online? watch videos?

In general, what chess-ish things do you do with your iPads?

I saw your question by accident. I have the chess.com app installed on my iPad. It works fine if you just want to give your move. If you want to talk in the forums, I really prefer a normal pc. It's rather difficult when you have to type on the thing. And more: I still haven't found a way to post pictures with the iPad. In Vote Chess the 'Abort' button is also really tricky... One touch on the screen and you are out. It happened to me.

But it's nice to hear you have been a good boy though Wink

Just one more thing: when you open the app while they are working on the site (updates, etc.), you have to reinstall the whole thing. That is quite annoying.

It's a nice present, enjoy it.

The app works great on my ipad2. The chess.com website works great too through safari as far as playing online chess, puzzles, live streaming video, lesson videos, chess mentor. I've never played live chess through safari, just the app. The one thing it does NOT let me do is watch archived video at the chess TV section of the site (no archive button at the top of the screen).

Here's another forum on some peoples thoughts of ipad apps. Hope it helps.

I like the Stockfish app.  It is a chess-playing program.  If you turn off the analysis, you can even use it to record your games and email the results (if your opponent will let you).  The Chess.com app is great and the ICC app is fine too.  On ICC I like to observe the GMs playing blitz.

I do lots of chessy things on my iPad:

    "Chess Time"
Free app.  Basically correspondence chess - I used it before I started using chess.com but since I got a bunch of friends and coworkers playing on that app I still use it for corespondence games instead of chess.com.  It retains all your past games and you can email the pgn files to yourself and has a nice interface.

"WorldChamps"  Chess puzzles app, the mate in x moves type.  Goes from mate in two and works its way up, it even has a couple mate in 17 lol.  I think it was $1.99 in the Canadian iTunes store.  The puzzles are all taken from historical games.

"tChess Pro" Can play against the computer in this app.  I think it was $9.99. I sometimes paste my pgn's into it and I get see the computer's rating after each move and see the computer's suggested move.  If I am working through a chess book and don't have a physical chess board handy I set up positions in here.

"Chess.com" app.  I mainly just do the tactics trainer in here. I haven't seen any links to the forums, chess mentor, or chess.com tv in the app so I do those in the web browser.

"Merkmatics Chess Clock" I think this app was $0.99. Basically, it turns your iPad into a chess clock. Very handy for OTB games.

I also stream chess videos from my iPad to Apple TV so that I can watch on my television.  This guy at http://www.youtube.com/user/Sirb0b1 uploaded a bunch of old videos from the early 80's from bbc and they are quite fun to watch.

OH! There's also a version of Chess Tiger for iPad that's simply gorgeous.  These apps are true bargains, IMO.

FYI e+chess app has The Art of chess books 1,2,3 on sale.i got a notification from the app. I believe it's $3 off per book. You might want to check them out, I think those are mostly games/puzzles (figure out the move) instead of a lot of text

The e+chess app is definitely worth getting.  You get one book for free.  The text displays on the left and the interactive board displays on the right.  I love my paper books but I suspect this is the future of chess books.

    Also Chessimo!

I have so many chess apps, I created a chess folder to keep it organized!

My faves are chessimo, shredder, chessbase and a chess clock. Other cool (but not as freq used) apps are blindfold chess, knight vision, dinosaur chess (for the kids) and others.

Besides the chess apps, you can get apps to help you with your study time, kindle for chess ebooks, pandora for tunes while you play., etc.

I've found the chess.com app to be adequate, but buggy. There are several threads here about the problems, and supposedly there is an update to fix pending apple approval. Otherwise, playing chess and studying is great with an ipad.

    Have fun!

For interactive books with a board check out Chess Viewer by Everyman Chess. It comes with a couple of free book samples.

Can anyone using iPads for Chess.com help me?  How do I make my moves on chess.com (online game) on my iPad sync with the same game on my MacBook?  Any moves on the Macbook game sync nicely with the iPad but not vice versa. Love to play on my iPad but have to be able to sync with the same game on my MacBook.  Many thanks.
