Do you think these are too stark?  Normally I'd got for a tan color... They'll be on a maple and walnut board.

 Pro-Tourney set from thechessstore.com

I have that set and it's bright and VERY easy to see in a well lit room.

But do you like the color?   Or is it so bright it pokes you in the eye? So you like the set?   Photos can be deceiving - does it look like plastic (like the venerable $5 cheapie USCF sets do)?

No, it's not that bright. The set was flawless when I received it along with the board. The pieces are well weighted and take up a bit of square space so if you're a "pusher" you'll be getting used to picking up the pieces. It's also taller than the average set, which may feel odd at first. It's great for blitz as they are almost impossible to knock down without excessive force in which the game starts to get sloppy or reckless. It's a great set for tournies and really stands out from those dinky sets usually there. I was happy with mine's. It just took a while to get used to the height of the piec

I think they look really nice buuuuut, liked your old set in the pics of your new board better.  Surprised you could even consider using plastic pieces on that beautiful walnut, maple, brazilian cherry gemof yours.  Just me though, those plastic ones are the nicest I've seen ( for plastic ).

Thanks, but I'm making another board for my son Cool

He didn't like the knights of the Cajun set and decided on a plastic set for this reason.  Wooden sets with knights he liked were outside our budget.  He prefered the look of the set I posted above but couldn't get past the color.  He selected this Hastings Series set instead from Wholesale chess.

I think they're beautiful and the color of the board will make them look sublime. DO IT.
