This is a response to an email I sent to Mr. Jeremy Silman asking if there were any pgn files available to go with his books. I got even better news for those of us ipad users.

    Dear Mr. Sawyer,
Sorry, no PGN. HOWEVER, there is light at the end of the tunnel!
My endgame book (SILMAN'S COMPLETE ENDGAME COURSE) should
appear in the Apple APP store in a month or 2. The App will have the entire
500+ page book PLUS an additional 87 audio clips! Of course, the pieces
will move by themselves if you touch the move, or touch the forward arrow,
or simply tap the screen (simplest!).
This will be for the iPhone and iPad, but eventually will also be out for Android
    products and others too.
Eventually (in the next year) all of my other books will also appear in these formats,
and HTRYC 4th Edition will also makes its way to these devices in the months ahead.
    Best,
    Jeremy Silman

    Dear Mr. Silman,

I was wondering if you have any pgn files available for your books or know where to get any pgn files of the games that you show in the books.
    Thanks C. Sawyer

Looks like it will. I asked Konvecta (the maker of CT-art) if they were planning anything like this and they said "No and there are no plans to either"..I told them "Big mistake!!"

I hope so. If someone were to adapt the content of books to interactive boards (like we have here on chess.com), that would likely entice me to buy whatever gadget had this feature.

Me too. In fact, I consider it the iPad "killer app" the lack of which is stopping me from buying that gadget right now.

How short-sighted and unadventurous of Convekta not to leap at this opportunity. Frown

Some will like books. That's fine. I personally think they are the least effective waybto learn but that's another post..

I will say that the chess.com app for iPad/iPhone is stinking killer! Play chess, tactics, articles, chess mentor and even videos. Basically anything you can do with pc right in your hands. If you are considering buying one, I can only think the price will drop like crazy soon with all the competition coming on. But Silman apps!! Oh yeah!! Awesome! Can't wait Mm40 wrote: fburton wrote: Oh, this is exciting news!  I hope this signals the start of a flood of interactive books. I hope so. Imho, reading books and working your way through examples and games therein is just another way of learning. Obviously different methods will suit different people, but I do think it helps to use a mix of methods.

One of the drawbacks of books is having to set up positions on a board, computer or electronic device - it's just tedious to do. Having a playable board embedded in the text does away with that time wasting element. That's why I find the prospect of electronic books exciting.

Are there any chess apps for iPods? I'd rather work on puzzles and combos and/or work on chess lessons instead of having a program to play against (or in conjunction with a chess-playing program)

There are tons of chess apps for ipods If its a ipod touch. If its just an ipod there are still apps for chess. But I have found the chess.com app to be the best for ipod/ipad/iphone/

Its the whole book with the positions and you can move the pieces on the screen. And there are audio clips explaining certain position or ideas.

Bronco 70 , and C- saw , You are mixing up two seperate things. The PGNs consist of all the diagram positions in the books. After reading a chapter or a page , when you want to assess a position further and examine the alternative lines ( which is not necessery but for me a must , to cement the author's idea in my head and as Dan Heisman says :" for getting to the truth of the position" ) then you will need analysis .The problem is that when you load a position on Ipad , the analysor engine ( like Stockfish or Shredder HD) can't import the position/pgn ! So you will need a "PGN viewer" in the second place . but as far as I know App store has not an App with both capability in one app yet. No doubt Silman's book app will be a step forward and will ease the whole proccesse but again it doesn't contain an analysing engine in it self !( unlike the every man's e- books which have a special app on Ipad so you can run chessbase in any point of them) .thus the main problem will remain intact. 2. Ipad's display is not a Retina at present ( unlike iphone 4G) , so studying a whole book on it will bother and injure your eyes ! although there are some rumors that an Ipad 3 or "Ipad 2 plus" is on the way with a better screen , it will be something around 2 monthes or later in the optimistic vision. Maybe Mr. Silman postpone realease of his Apps for then....

Thanks C-saw and aldin299 for the info and clarification . Aldin299 do you like the Everymans pgn reader and e books? Are there a lot of ebooks to choose from?

Does anyone have the pgn's that go with Silman's Endgame Course book?  That would be really useful.

That's what I wanted. I even emailed the author and he didn't even have any. I'm sure someone does though. They are probably on chessgames.com
