I'm wondering if I'd be able to use Fritz alone for my database needs, which I *think* are pretty straightforward. These are the things I'm less sure would be in there:
- search DB by position (i.e. FEN, etc.)
- search by player name (incl. ability to specify white or black for that player)
- search by opening name (not just ECO code)
A bonus here would to be able to search by player result: for instance, show me games where "deepgreene" lost while playing the Evans Gambit as white, etc.
Where does Fritz's built-in database functionality come up short?
Opinions much appreciated! Cheers.
it has chessbase with it doesnt it? I have 10 and you get a free year if online games and db .
you can pretty much search all that.
you can set up a position and have it searched on whatever you want. I usually only search games of ppl over 2500 in whatever I am looking for.
i use 10 for all my opening prep. Searching games in the openings I use.
Chessbase is a separate product from Fritz. The db features of Fritz are pretty lightweight compared to Chessbase.
The following is very dated (2004), but is still relevant, I think: http://bit.ly/48M89B
I think we've talked about this in the past, but it bears mentioning -- on OS X (and Linux & Windows) SCID will do all the things you're asking for and will cost you nothing except a little time to learn how to use it. It isn't the prettiest, but it works and is being actively developed.
Thanks, gents!
I think I tend to underutilize my database features, so I was curious whether the search filters in Fritz 12 could meet my needs on its own. Basically, if I can generate a list of games where my OTB buddy beat me as black, or every game where I played the King's Gambit and lost, I'm probably set.
I know on older versions of Fritz the search features were not terribly robust. I remember having a hard time searching by position, but that was like 3 Fritz's ago, so things might have changed.
