review leningrad set

Sort:
aristotele1

As I said in another thead GM4U sent me a set, here is the review and some pics.

Shipping: the parcel was shipped on April 9th and I got it on the 15th, six days from England to Italy, not impressive.

Packing: very good: the set arrived packed in a cardboard box, further protected by a layer of cardboard outside. Every piece has a slot cut in foam inside the box.

Quality of the set: the pieces are stable (no wobbling pieces as I had in some other sets from different vendors), the weight is appropriate (king is about 70 g, and the pawns around 30 g), and the wood is of good quality (being picky there are some tiny black specks on some of the white army pieces).

The pieces are carved with care, the slit of the bishops and the crenellation of the rooks are well cut, and so are the spikes of the queens’ crowns; same applies to the knights: the mane is well carved, only minor probs in the heads. Being picky again the ball of the pawns is not perfectly round.

All pieces have a good level of polishing.

An important point is in my opinion the fact that after careful inspection I would not ask for replacement on any of the pieces, which I think (I hope actually) depends on good quality control by the company.

Design: I think that the set presents itself as having a sort of eastern European design: the knight is reminiscent of the one in the HoS Zagreb set, but the rest of the pieces have a classical Staunton-like design, and so the result is a mix which may meet one’s taste or not (it does not meet mine for instance). Compared to a Jaques repro set the pieces have narrower bases and the design is to my eyes less elaborate and much less elegant.

Overall, the set is clearly not a luxury set, and some feature of the design are quite basic, but the quality is sound.

I attach some pics, comparing the set to the one I had on the board (a 4,4" set).

I/m not really into the whole Zagreb thing.

Still It look like a nice set. Any idea what is the story behind this design?

I found a leningrad set on the HOS website. Just as this wit hthe Zagreb horse and the regular pieces for the rest of the set.

No much info I have found on this... is this historical or something?

no. it's a made up design w/ randomly selected names.

+1 to Carl his bishop mitre is faced vs HOS

aristotele1

? sorry Jolbac, I did not get your comment

just a little update, after playing a couple of games with the set. I am really impressed by the stability of the set, though they are not heavy weights it is very difficult to knock the pieces down, even pushing the bishop by the top of the mitre it only goes forward and does not tilt. So it is a pleasure to play with the set.

On the other hand I am less happy with the design, especially the bishop.

I'm no expert but if you see how the tip is flattened one side this was a feature on period Jaques sets and others I'm sure. It's something I like.

aristotele1

i see, it is pretty common though, I think that the carvers cut the slit at the same time as the ball. Not all Jaques set have it this way, in the so called Lasker set the ball is complete
