Does anyone know which is stronger, the free Rybka or Fritz 11?

From what I've heard Rybka2 is better than Fritz11; it totally depends on the hardware you're using though.

When you get the money  though you should purchase 3.0 if you like 2.3-

it is the right thing to do

Rybka 2.2 (free) is stronger than any other commercial chess engine , including Fritz 11! Stronger than Rybka 2.2 are only newer versions or Rybka (2.3.2a and 3.0).

Check this page out, it's great for comparing strenght of different engines:

http://www.computerchess.org.uk/ccrl/4040/rating_list_all.html

Note that Rybka 2.2 32 bit version is even stronger than 64 bit versions of most other engines.

Also note that Fritz11 is on the 10th place on the list. Fritz is history!

I was trying to figure out how to do something like that, how did you do it?

Here's the results of a 40 game match I ran between the free Rybka and Fritz 11 using 1'+1" time controls... Rybka wins decisively.

In this match Rybka was rated at +89 elo compared to Fritz 11

I can tell you how I do it and let me know if it makes sense. I have Fritz 11; I also have the free Rybka engine downloaded from Rybka site. Open Fritz and go to File - New - Engine Match. You then will see a window where you set the parameters of your engine match including which engines, openings books, # of games, max moves, time controls, etc. hit OK and off it goes. Does this make sense? What engine/GUI do you have?
