I am interested in knowing if the software currently being sold for the Palm at their website is worth the $20?

I'm not sure which software you're referring to, but I reviewed the Palm Hiarcs chess software here, and there are also other suggestions in the comments.

I will check out the link you've posted. I was wondering about Chess Genius:

I'm looking forward to your review! Hiarcs may be a few ELO stronger, but most people who have a copy of Chess Genius seem quite happy with it.

I use Genius on my Zire 21 and it provides all the strength I need to play as seriously as I could want. Probably 2200+ elo (more for USCF). Open Chess, which is a free download, seems to play at the same strength though I think it is supposed to be stronger than Genius.

If I had a more current pda I'd maybe opt for Hiarcs. The main advantage for me would not be

having a stronger opponent but instead getting a more reliable analysis of positions from my games.

I don't have any trouble finding stronger opponents! It really is the issue of 'reliable analysis' as you put it.  Hiarcs is just a bit pricey for someone who is still playing at my level.

Hi, naedling, fellow votechess member!  I have chessgenius 2.30 on my palm pda, I like it.  I would say it plays up to about 2100 maybe, just my observations.

p.s. I loved your last post on votechess.

Alright! Go Purdue! Are you in NC now? They have a "pretty fair" bball program there too ;)

re; pda chess analysis,  I haven't really used it for that..not sure how good it would be. It (chessgenius) does have an analyze feature though..

I'm in Virginia; I really haven't connected to the ACC after growing up in the Midwest where there are 'real' college basketball and football teams. VTech has started to come on the last several years, but they just don't have the tradition of a Purdue or Michigan or Nebraska or Indiana U.
