That knight looks like he needs to eat a cheeseburger.

Here is a picture from the Anand Kramnik match.  Its not great for telling what sort of set they are using I will have to look to see if I have a few other pictures.

I believe the chess set used in major tournaments is timeless set manufactured by DGT with e-board to receive the moves electronically through usb or bluetooth. It is being used in World blitz championship, wijk aan zee, Linares, London Chess Classic, Russian championship and so on.

If you don't need the e-board electronic features you can also get the set (called championship set) in House of Staunton

But for the Anand - Carlsen match, this is the set (link below) being used. I believe it is the same one that was used in London Candidates 2013

These guys are so good that they could play with any chess pieces or board! Carlsen should insist on a real Jaques set as should Anand IMO.

Now that the championship has started will anyone buy the newly designed set for it?

the new design doesn't appear to be inspiring either player, judging by game one...

Isn't that the same set design used in the candidates that Carlsen won?

Yes. It's the same set as the Candidates

Is this a chess set thread or a Bobby Fischer thread?

Buy one? Not for over 400$ for an "ebonized" set.

I might put that on my list of chess sets to buy.

I think the best price is about $360 (including shipping in the US). Search 'carlsen anand chess set' on eBay.

HOS had or has a set with a rook slightly taller than the knight and or bishop.

Agreed. It's actually more expensive than my 4-inch king set that has full ebony black pieces.

The tables and sets were fabricated by Fidel's orders. The pieces were large, club sized men (4-1/4") and of boxwood and ebonized boxwood.

In fact, for the first USSR v. The World match, Fischer's table alone was one from the Cuban Olympiad.

I imagine he must have at least expressed his approval of the gear somewhere along the line.

Hey, the bearded dude has a cigar: he's smoking at the board!  Just who does he think he is??

The chess set for the Candidates and World match championship is very nice, but the knight is a little bit skinny.

From all the chess sets, I really love the timeless set from DGT. I have one DGT electronic board and it's very nice.
