Sheesham for me. It goes well with the boxwood pieces IMO. The crimson stain is too bright & loud for me although it looks nice. Why won't CB come out with this set in dark walnut is beyond me? I think a dark walnut/boxwood set would look better than any other combination.
Which Color do you like best on Chess Bazaar's Dubrovnik Set?
My Dubrovnik set from CB is en route at this moment! I ordered the Crimson 3.6" as the Sheesham was out of stock. Checking the website I see the Crimson 3.6 is now out of stock as well; maybe I got the last one. This is my first "high end" chess set and I'm looking forward to comparing it against the $14 set I just bought from chess cafe.
i'm glad they ran out of those Crimson sets, otherwise I would have to buy one
i really like that color. I like the Rosewood but that's too close in color to my Noj one in Walnut.
Their 3.6" set is much better than the 4" one. Not surprised both sets in 3.6" are out of stock.
3.6" sheesham/boxwood is the best.
Hi Tucumcari,
I would like to see a $14 chess set do you have pictures?
I bought a wood set in the 1970s which was about as cheap as one could get at 12 GBP It was not a particulally good set. Slightly more desirable than a cheap plastic set.
I just bought and received the 4 1/8" set from chess cafe and it is fantastic. I will match this set with any set today for $100 to $175 range. This baby weighed in at almost exactly 4 pounds came with 4 queens and MIGHT even be lead weighted. The magnet wasn't attracted to the weight.
$39.02 and ITS QUALITY. Had no reason or want to say they had a defective piece or pieces. The knights in the set are very impressive for $39.02. I am sure they are losing money on this.
For anyone who wants to see a pic here is the URL. No I haven't taken any pictures yet as I hate taking pictures with my cell phone.

3.6" sheesham/boxwood is the best.
What makes you say the 3.6" is better than their 4". Was is balancing or quality? Did you feel the bases of the 4" should be a bit wider?

I don't own any of the Dubrovniks for now. Neither Cb nor HoS seem to have got the pawns right, the way Noj does it.
The 3.6" CB comes closest to it, based on pictures I am seeing that others have posted. The 4" CB pawn almost looks like a classic Staunton pawn.
Here is Izmet giving a small little sermon on the 1950 Dubrovnik pawn. :)
Yes that's the one. The Dubrovnik set arrived earlier today just before I left for work, it is stunning. Still waiting on the set from CC. I'll be posting photos of both, including ones I took during the unboxing of the CB set. Superb packaging and the pieces are beyond my expectations. I would not hesitate for a second to buy from Chess Bazaar again.
I also purchased the crimson 3.6 CB Dubrovnik. It is a beautiful set.
I also purchased the Chess Cafe International Series ebonized set. I just don't get how one can sell a quality wood set at such a low price. At $15.98, I bought two sets :) As much as I like CB for cost/quality, it is going to be extremely difficult to beat the Chess Cafe offering.
Put it another way, even though I like my CB crimson Dubrovnik, I prefer having 5 International sets (taking into account shipping).

Very tempting to double up or buy a set for a kid/grandchild/or a friend at that price. How can they do it? They are losing money, they are just freeing up some cash to buy other products or pay down debt. That would be my guess. BTW do not buy the pocket chess set for $9 on sale. Total junk, can not use it at all. Pieces do not fit and if you force them in the pieces will bend in half eventually and break. Very bad product. Doesn't anyone test the product before they buy it?
I have both the 3.6" Crimson and Sheesham, and I prefer the Sheesham, though I do love the Crimson too. I also have a Walnut/Maple Noj and a Crimson/Maple custom DGT Noj...love them all.

Hey John, maybe we should call you "Mr. Dubrovnik" based on all the wonderful Dubrovnik sets you have in your collection!
Confessions of a Dubrovnik junkie 😜 though I dare say you have just as many Mike, if not more. 😎 It's a great set for OTB, that's for sure.
Chess Bazaar offers it Dubrovnik Chess Set in 4 color woods with the Boxwood pieces: Sheesham wood, Rosewood, Crimson stain, and Black stain. Which color do you like best? Its a difficult pick but my choice is the Crimson stain followed by the Sheesham wood. The Crimson stain is an amazing color and really striking.
