Can you use a video to kill a spider with? No!
That's a tad dogmatic! Surely it depends on the spider?
depends how the individual learns
Yes, and some people learn best from one-on-one instruction.
I'm more comfortable with books. I think videos give superficial analysis. Though I'm uncomfortable with long and many variations. I prefer books which emphasise on concepts rather than long variations.
Both have their places
videos can be very effective for relating nice ideas quickly and I really enjoyed watching the Chessbase Series where players actually commented on their own games.
if teaching a concept they are very nice since a coach can express specific ideas and we remember more as humans with verbal and visual interaction.
The draw back and where books shine is that not only can you cover more information but readers are forced to THINK and MOVE pieces around instead of being a passive viewer.
In the end for the money books are better for a learning tool
I sort of use both, but like reading a chess book more, although book can be long and boring, they are rich in content. My first book I read was Janos Flesch Planning in chess, from there I got a interest in reading chess books. I usually look on reviews on the book before deciding if I would get it or not, cause there are books with to much analysis. If a person reads enough chess books they will learn to read chess books without a board. "Chess Blitz Fever" I saw some of the Alexandra Kosteniuk games she submitted on youtube and heard about the DVD, I'll get some money together cause this is a good DVD.
I only came back to the thread to look at Gemma Atkinson.
