Today I got a brochure from Dell advertising their new computers with Windows 7. I have windows xp because it plays all my games and chess software. (I don't like Vista.)

What is the word about Windows 7?

What do you know about it and Chessmaster 11?

Is it still in the beta condition even though Dell is selling it?

Windows 7 is no longer in beta, but, personally, I wouldn't consider getting a new version of ANY Microsoft product until at least Service Pack 1. Just my $.02.

Thanks. I would like to know more. Vista was a flop for me because it would not play any of my games. I'd hate to buy a laptop (which Dell is selling at a good price) with Windows 7 and have none of my games work - like Chessmaster or Fritz - or Civilization 4 for that matter.

My old Windows 98 played all the old Atari games. Now, as far as I know, nothing does.

How come you cant run Chessmaster or Fritz on your Vista? I got Vista and both those "games", and they work perfectly...

Screw Windows.  Go with Linux lol.  Windows is good for gaming.  That's about it.

Windows seven is getting fantastic reviews.  It's more of a second version of Vista that addresses all the initial problems.  The pro version has a really nice xp mode that's easy to use for software that may balk at windows 7.  I've been running xp forever and am taking the plunge to 7 this week (30 dollar educational upgrade offer).

Actually for a Microsoft product i have read and heard nothing but really good/great reviews, and opinons.  The one thing i did hear that upgrading from Vista is easy...upgrading from XP is going to be really difficult.

hmm I read the xp mode was just for troublesome applications that just wouldnt work outside of xp.  I was under the impression it was not designed for games.  I have got chessmaster 8000 running as well on vista as it does on xp*, and I've not had any trouble with vista.  I think people just love to hate microsoft.

*ie it runs but has the same stupid critical bug carried over from xp courtesy of the collective incompetence of ubisoft and ati.

Its not a matter of hating MS.  Its a matter of them putting out crappy software.

hmm I beg to differ.  Most of the software they put out is actually rather good.  including vista which got an insane amount of hate without really doing much wrong, perhaps a victim of their own success with xp.  If you're upset that vista was sluggish your issue is probably with your laptop manufacturer for crappy hardware, or with yourself for believing their marketing.  If you had a genuine problem then chances are either it was very specific to some niche software, or you were just genuinely unlucky.  In fact, windows 7 which is suddenly the greatest thing ever is really in many ways just a tweaked vista.

Then we agree to disagree on this.  But years of dealing with MS and using Linux makes me believe that MS isnt anywhere nearly as good.  Vista was a bad idea from the start.  MS products are always full of bugs, security issues, and after how many years of IE its still a security hackers dream.
