I love Chess Mentor! It really is the best automated tutor I've ever seen (and still better that most human ones I've tried, too!).

But of course there is room for improvements... I would like to see (in this order):

  1. The possibility of actually clicking on and viewing (on the board) the variations and continuations in the explanations.
  2. A feedback field in the actual lesson's window. Copying the lesson name and posting feedback to that lesson in this forum is too cumbersome Wink.
  3. A more realistic rating calculation. My OTB rating is almost 800 points below my Chess Mentor rating! Like, I'm not being properly punished for suggesting a move which immediately would drop a half or a whole point in a real game (that one should really drop the score to 0%). Using hints and help should be punished more. Suggesting a move that would be ok in a real game should be punished less (every good move should be listed as an alternative solution, every lesser move which is still ok should be punished just a little).
  4. A training guide based on my weaknesses, suggesting things I should do (in addition to taking more CM lessons Wink) to improve on those areas.

great ideas!

1. yes - good point!

2. perhaps :)

3. yes. i think we may have over-reacted a little when there were some complaints about how harsh we rated people in CM.

4. you should be able to see your weaknesses in the PERSONAL REPORT are. but then getting an automated plan for that? excellent idea!!!

Eric, did you mean PROGRESS REPORT, above? It gives a terrific breakdown, but it IS a bit overwhelming. I second the motion for an automated written plan based on that report. I guess maybe that's what the Adaptive feature does, right? But Adaptive operates silently behind the scenes. I would like to know where it's taking me and why.

So far I am thrilled with this program. Within a week i've seen my games drastically improve.

The one thing I would really like is a way to make notes on each lesson, so that later i can find it again easier. For instance, a great KID lesson may simply be labeled "lesson 6" making it much harder for me to find later on and review.

Cheers
