It is bull crap.
Barnes Defense is a dubious chess opening characterized by the moves:
This is similar to the irregular Barnes Opening a tempo down. It is considered a very poor move, as it opens no lines for Black to develop his pieces, allows White free and easy development, deprives the g8 knight of its most natural square (f6), and weakens the position of the black king. It does attack a central square, e5, but 1...d6 (the Pirc Defense), or even 1... Nc6 (the Nimzowitsch Defense) are better moves to attack this square. Alternatively, 1...e5, occupying the square immediately, is considered one of Black's most reliable moves. Barnes Defense is named after Thomas Wilson Barnes, an English master who, amazingly, defeated one of the greatest players of the time, Paul Morphy, with it in an offhand game played in London in July 1858
I agree with KillaBeez
bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad.
Guys i always plays f6 and always win.
A guy at my chess club plays that and wins, but he was rated over 2300 back in the 70's. I think he does just to level the playing field
Sorry sir Eric, maybe for you it's bad,but check your Data Base,it's not so bad in the hands of a good player,no?
This IS bad. Good players can use it because they're, well, good. But I would never recommend using this, it just does nothing for black besides weaken the king and block the knight. Anything is better than this move.
1...f6 is good......... in certain Fischer Random positions :)
it really depends on how you play the rest of the game, or even the next 3 moves
Booo! Don't play this.
...f6 is horrible. Please know enough about chess to understand this.
Well, if everyone's gonna go hatin' on 1...f6 they sure aren't gonna like the second move of the fried fox attack! 2...Kf7!?
Come on guys, don't critisize this opening if you've never played it,if you've studied it or played it a little bit then give your point of view for it's great for trowing the oposition in to a complete confusion!
Any Class C USCF could take on a peer who makes the mistake of ...f6, and using just that moderate skill and a good grasp of opening principles, would amass a nice plus score. May all my opponents try to "confuse" me so.
Yeah, if someone plays such a move as their first, its not so much confusing as it is heartening. There's really not much to be confused by - just play to basic principles (with 2. d4, for example), and white already has a much better position.
Continue with g5!!
