Alekhine defense, Shmid variation

Sort:
bresando

After 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Ne5 3.d4 d6 4.Nf3 (possibly the best variation against the alekhine) a very rare move recently caught myh eye:

4...Nb6!? (Shmid variation), an absurd looking but not pointless move.

B moves the N again without being provoked to enable the idea of putting immediate pressure on W centre vie g6/Bg7. In a certain sense B is after an improved alburt(4...g6) variation where W can't place his f1 bishop on the active c4 square. 5.c4 instead is a direct trasposition to an exchange variation where having already developed the king N prevents W from playing the most challenging ideas. B scores nicely if W just plays the natural moves.

B problem is likely the direct 5.a4! going after the wandering N. I have found some high-profile games in the variation and B looks not lost but certainly under pressure.

I'm having trouble finding any detailed online source on this variation. Is there anybody out here with some experience in the variation? Can you suggest me a good source?

Thanks in advance!

Thanks but i was looking for something like an article with some verbal explanation and a few basic ideas just to get an overview of the line. It's rather hard to extract the key lines from your very dense post. Thanks for sharing aniway! i i read it correcly it gives a5 as the answer to a4? it feels wrong to me.

Sorry, I have this thing about SCID's opening report, I can never control myself.Sealed

What it does show, though, it is not as rare as you might think, over 600 master games is quite a lot. And White's total score is only 48%, so there probably is something there.

W playing c4 is exactly what B wants as i explained in the first post: a trasposition to a not very critical exchange variation is not to be feared. Also if W wants an exchange he can force it immediately with 4.c4 .

I know that Nb6 is not a totally unseen move and you can find some high-profile games with it. As a whole B has a great score but not at all against an immediate a4. That's the only problem in my view.

I have looked briefly at B alternatives to 5...a5. Some of the games are between quite strong players but is general the results are not encouraging.

5...c6 was played by the great Larsen against a 2500+ opponent. the idea is to meet 6.a5 with Ne5, and in case of c4 the N can now fall back to c7. Larsen managed to outplay his opponent from this position but it feels not very attractive to me. The reason is that the same position with W pawn on a2 can be reached via the simple 4...c6. I am not strong enough to clearly understand if and how having a pawn on a5 improves W prospects, but 4...c6 always felt like an inaccurate 4...dxe5/5...c6(miles) to me and i don't see the point of reaching the position from this move order.

The provocative 5...Nc6 was played in  1-0, Filippov (2481) vs. Dzhumaev (2505) ;W was indeed provoked:6.e6!?(similar to 4...Nc6 5.c4 Nb6 6.e6) fxe6 7.Ng5 h6?! and W soon got a big advantage. 7...g6 is the right move in the corresponding position of the 4...Nc6 variation, but i vaguely feel that having not played c4 helps W.

5...Bg4 was played in 0-1, Pilaj (2297) vs. Fahrner (2365) and looks quite logical: once the LSB is developed B has nothing against having his N kicked to d7.Play will likely be similar to the 4...Bg4 variation In the game W tryed to avoid this with the ferocious 6.h3 Bh5 7.g4!? Bg6 8.e6 fxe6 9.Ng5 Nf6 10.Bg2 c6 11.Nxe6 Qd7 12.Nxf8 Rxf8

How do you evaluate this position? B won the game but was also the highest rated player. This might be an interesting variaton for B.

bresando

i have looked at some lines with a computer and the result was quite depressingFrown

The diagrammed position might be ok for B but W mistake has been capturing the bishop on f8. There are several slightly different positions which can arise after 9.Ng5 but they all have in common that after capturing on e6, W can retreat the N to f4. B is presumably forced to retreat his bishop to f7 and then his position looks quite messy. I really don't like B here. Unfortunately W play up to 9.Ng5 is rather forcing and it's unlikely B can improve.

I briefly looked at 6...Bxf3 7.Qxf3 Nc6 intending dxe5 instead of Bh5 but it looks like B is just a tempo behind. W can combine all sorts of dangerous e6 and a6(undermining the c6 knight) ideas and B task of holding the position together looks impossible. Bye bye 5...Bg4!

At this point i am convinced that B best is to block the a-pawn advance with 5...a5. Since this move has been played in 99% of the games you might say it's hardly a surprise, but i was really hoping for a playable alternative...

bresando

I don't know, for sure it's playable, but it seems to me that in the challenging lines of the alekhine white almost always goes for a quick c4. I think black should have very decent chances after 5.Nc3, blocking that pawn, your line for example looks completely fine for black (looks like a  quiet line of the kengis variation [4...dxe5 5.Nxe5 g6] with white playing without a real plan) and also 5...Bg4 looks line an improved mainline for black.

billwall

I ran against this variation years ago in a tournament.  Didn't have a problem with it.

bresando

Very nice win, congratulations. Acoording to my limited understanding 8...Nb4?! was the move which made the game unpleasant for black. Maybe simple development with e6 would have been better. I don't think white sould expect an advantage in your line, in general those Bg4 lines where white plays exd6 are considered roughly equal.
