After 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Ne5 3.d4 d6 4.Nf3 (possibly the best variation against the alekhine) a very rare move recently caught myh eye:
4...Nb6!? (Shmid variation), an absurd looking but not pointless move.
B moves the N again without being provoked to enable the idea of putting immediate pressure on W centre vie g6/Bg7. In a certain sense B is after an improved alburt(4...g6) variation where W can't place his f1 bishop on the active c4 square. 5.c4 instead is a direct trasposition to an exchange variation where having already developed the king N prevents W from playing the most challenging ideas. B scores nicely if W just plays the natural moves.
B problem is likely the direct 5.a4! going after the wandering N. I have found some high-profile games in the variation and B looks not lost but certainly under pressure.
I'm having trouble finding any detailed online source on this variation. Is there anybody out here with some experience in the variation? Can you suggest me a good source?
