Are you a fan of the Caro-Kann?

The Caro-Kann leads to a solid position with few if any weaknesses.  The only way to avoid it's solid play is to play something unorthodox which will create a weakness of it's own.

    Do you agree with this?

If the e5 version is played, you play Bf5 and your opponent almost always plays Qd3 which after the exchange gives you a good bishop. If the exchange variation is played, after taking back you will have more central pawns and greater central control. After Nc3/Nd2, you exchange the pawns and have a choice of Nd7, Nf6, or Bf5. Nf6 creates a weak kingside pawn structure and Nd7 is a little passive. Bf5 is your best choice. After Bf5 your opponent has 2 main choices, Ng3 or Nc5. Both give Black a good game.

Do you agree with this, too?

I've played the Caro for years now, after being a long-term French player.  Both share a psychological advantage because many White players hate to face them.

Do not dismiss 4...Nd7, which brought Karpov so much success, just because ...Bf5 has returned to fashion.

Also, the Bronstein-Larsen 4 ...Nf6 can upset the apple cart for White if he isn't cautious.  Oddly enough, in the four times I tried ...Nf6, none of my opponents (1700-1950 USCF) played 5 Nxf6+, probably fearing preparation, favoring 5 Ng3 instead!  I've finally decided that Black should play 5...h5 (I didn't in any of those games, but won anyway) and if 6 h4 Bg4  7 f3 Bc8!? the Bishop has done his work, White's Kingside is a mess of weakness, and returns home to contemplate his future.

hey! why don't you challenge the "Sicilian Superstars" group and to know once and for all what is the better defense against e4. The Sicilian or the Caro-Kann.

    Just a thought
