Did you even see it as checkmate? or did you just see the king/queen fork? I'm guessing you where playing blitz.

Black should have seen it coming when there was the biggest of all forks, if not the checkmate.

Go to the Forum CHESS SHOWCASE/Best Chess Games

and look at  Livitsky - Marshall  (Breslau 1912)

then tell me what the best checkmate ever was.

Livitsky resigned before the final move was made.

It was called Frank Marshall's "immortal game".

Here is a short one that isn't bad.

    White Mates in 13 moves:

    1. e4  1. c6

    2. Nc3  2. d5

    3. Nf3  3. dxe4

    4. Nxe4  4. Bf5

    5. Ng3  5. Bg6

    6. h4  6. h6

    7. Ne5  7. Bh7

    8. Qh5  8. g6

    9. Bc4  9. e6

    10. Qe2  10. Nf6 ?

    11. Nxf7  11. Kxf7

    12. Qxe6+  12. Kg7

    13. Qf7    MATE

To quote Euripides, short but sweet.

That's because there's a space in it - you need to remove it.

A grand fork, and to top it off, checkmate. Not too shabby.
