I play the Grünfeld!
Best Defenses against d4?
I am sorry to say, that this question is a false question. PQ4 is one of the two standard first moves, so the theory is enormous. Find your own way.
Very eceptional...
Catalan
If u don't like any one of them mentioned.
U shouln't play chess. or play with chidren
That's not even close to the Catalan...
So against d4 :
1. Slav
2. Grunfeld
3. King's Indian
4. Nimo-Indian
5.QGD
6.QGA
7.Benoni
8.Benko gambit
9. Dutch defense
Is that in any particular order?

u know very little and just emphasing on sequence rather than positional theories.According to theory it is catalan.
The reason openings have names is to identify sequences...
So against d4 :
1. Slav
2. Grunfeld
3. King's Indian
4. Nimo-Indian
5.QGD
6.QGA
7.Benoni
8.Benko gambit
9. Dutch defense
Is that in any particular order?
Thank you!
My favorite is the King's Indian. Not going to get into why, it would take a whole book.

You forgot "10. None of the Above"
What I play isn't in your offbeat list either. You've got:
1.d4 g6 2.c4 Bg7 3.Nc3 c5 4.d5 Bxc3 (Dzindzi Indian)
1.d4 g6 2.c4 Bg7 3.Nc3 d6 4.e4 Nc6 (Averbakh)
1.d4 g6 2.c4 Bg7 3.Nc3 d6 4.e4 e5 (Another form of the Averbakh, and what I play)
What is the best for an inexperienced player ? I would prefer a versatile option to deal with whatever white chooses after move 1....though I am better at positional play, I prefer simple positions, even if they are more tactical in nature. Does anyone have what they think is most fitting ?

Well since I am an inexperienced player like you, against 1. e4, I would go with French, or Caro-Kann. Those are relatively solid and pretty simple. If you're looking more aggressive and complex positions (which I know you don't want to, just laying it here) you should go with most of the Sicilian openings. Against d4...well, that's what I'm here to learn about..

I have been playing this and seems good so far...
A40: Modern Defense: Queen Pawn Fianchetto
1.d4 g6
Hmm, modern defense.
Interesting idea....huh ? I was going out on a limb and thinking to myself that this defense is aptly named. It is said that necessity is the mother of invention, so it seems to be fitting that it would be used against the latest fad of white openings.
