Try the Bongcloud Opening for white and/or the Anti-Bongcloud for black. Start with this. You can search and find some interesting variations on the main line(s) of the Bongcloud

The first I opening I learned was the two knights defense. I suggest playing the Vienna game for white and the King's Indian for Black.

I recommend you read  Seirawan's Play Winning Chess...makes good recommendations for openings for new players. Safe and solid recommendations.

Interesting topic. 1. e4 is a must for sure.

I'll answer this first by saying... choose one opening and learn it well, in that case I recommend the ruy lopez. Of course you won't be playing the ruy lopez every single time you play 1.e4 so I'll include a few other openings you can learn relatively easily that will add a bit of spice to your games!

Now... if you're going to go with the Ruy Lopez, go with variations involving d3. Andrew Martin has a chessbase dvd out called "The ABC of the Ruy Lopez" and that covers the lines if I recall correctly.

Against the sicilian go with 2. Nc3 and Grand Prix lines (particularly ones involving Bb5) I'm sure you'll find the games you play interesting and instructive if you play this opening for a while.

Against the french hmmm I think the King's Indian Attack might be easier to learn and bring about quite a few learning opportunities, particularly if you decide to play the King's Indian Defense as black.
