It is the French Defense, where black gives white slight center advantage but can counter-attack of the queen side. Another line of the French goes 1. e4 e6 2. d4 d5 3. e5 c5. In this line, black tries to regain the center and gather an attack on the queen side. White at this time wants to concentrate on black's kingside, but not lose in the center.

Do not be fooled by 1 ... e6. The french defence is a very sharp line to some, as most do not play into deep theoretical and sharp lines, most can say the french is dull. e6 prepares an obvious d5, so black can fight for the center. Whites best continuations are d3, to enter the kings indian attack, or d4, usually going into a Winawer.
