The Colle is boring if you ask me, play the Polish Opening (1.b4) to avoid theory!

There is no such thing as the best opening. There are a bunch that are equally good, a bunch that are ok in practice but not as good as the first group, and lots that are just plain bad. Examples (not a comprehensive list by any means):

Good:
Ruy Lopez, Giuocco Piano, French Defence, Sicillian Defence, Caro-Kann, Queen's Gambit, English Opening

Ok:
King's Gambit, Smith-Morra Gambit, Danish Gambit, Blackmar-Diemer Gambit, Pirc, Alekhine, King's Indian Attack, Reti, Scandinavian

Bad:
Grob, "Queen's Raid" (1.e4 e5 2.Qh5), most "unusual" openings (e.g.,  1.f3,  1.a4,  1.h4,  etc.)

I don't like the Bird's.  If I am not playing in a rated game, I like playing the Muzio Gambit.  Otherwise, I just play old fashioned openings.

I think d4 is whites best first move(c4 is good too, but is countered by reversed sicilian, don't get me started on e4s weaknesses, and knight moves are best conserved for a couple moves(3-5) as the c and f pawn may be needed). And it controls two central squares.

I really agree with you on the fact that there is no best opening, but I have to disagree about some things on your list.

Firstly, I you can't sort the chess openings on 3 category's without sorting all of them.

Secondly, I really don't think that the Blackmar-Diemer Gambit is ok. It's worse even than moves like 1.a4 or h4 after one of them you are just playing as if you were black, but after the Blackmar-Diemer you're a pawn down without having enough compensation for it.

Thirdly, the reti opening is known as completely sound and so does the king's indian attack.

Fourthly, the alekhine and the Pirc are way better than the scandinavian.

THE BEST OPENING.   Is that Albert Best's opening?

To Kosmed,

The Pirc and Alekhine may be better than the Scandinavian, but not better than a lot of other openings.  I was playing an aquaintance who came out with Alekhine's Defense, and I told him it wasn't the best...he said, "If it is good enough for Bobby Fischer, it's good enough for me".  He was referring to one of the Fischer/Spassky games in their world championship match.  There actually is an early transposition from the Alekine into the Scandinavian, when White chooses to avoid the defense.  Botvinnik said he thought the Pirc was stronger than the King's Indian.  I find the Pirc cramping myself (when White plays the Austrian Attack variation).  The Alekhine defense succeeds or fails depending on how well White knows the opening.

d4 then Bg5 Trompowsky attack, depending on what black replays with after d4.
