Friends, What kind of "soundness rating" do you give The Budapest Gambit? "Funtime Rating"?
Depends on who you're playing. The better the player, the more unsound it becomes. If he's a memorized opening kind of player it could become interesting. Very aggressive play and troublesome for those who haven't seen it. What do you want out of the game? Fun or soundness? Where you playing? The local club, OTB, on-line? You want a cut and dried rendering?, all you'll get is perceptions.
The Budapest is one gambit that I haven't looked into that much (which is kind of rare). I guess it's sort of an Englund Gambit, but with white's QB pawn out (which means he can't block the bishop check) but also with black's knight out (which would be good except that the pawn is attacking the knight) so the same combo of attacking the pawn with the knight, then the queen and then checking after the bishop defends, and then threatening the rook, wouldn't work... however, playing for traps isn't usually best, and so positionally this gambit could be interesting... I think I'd like to try it sometime.
The Gambit King
P. S.: If you don't know what I'm talking about in the Englund, here it is:
i. P-Q4 P-K4!?
ii. PxP Kt-QB3
iii. Kt-KB3 Q-K2
iv. B-KB4 Q-QKt5 ch.
v. B-Q2 QxPQKt7
vi. B-QB3 B-QKt5!
vii. Q-Q2 BxB
viii. QxB?? Q-QB8 checkmate 0-1
