Chess.com has helped improve quite a bit since I am now playing constantly throughout the day.  It is addictive like crack cocaine or bacon.

 also..."marysson" = hillarious

While I find that playing a lot of games at chess.com has made me a better chess.com player it doesn't seem to have done anything for my OTB play.  I recently went to my first USCF tournament and got smoked.  I was in the Under 1200 class and it was a G60 time control and I lost 3 of my 4 games.

I currently have a rating of over 1800 here.  Yes, it is higher than I deserve. Those three time wins helped a lot.  But I pretty much stay around 1650 to 1750 here.  In the OTB games not one of my opponents was rated over 1100 USCF.

I thought my two biggest problems were getting used to the time pressure. I made a lot of sloppy moves.  And I just have a hard time getting used to a 3D board after playing here. I just don't seem to see the lines and files the same way.  In every game I dropped a piece.  Something I never do here.  I am curious if any other members have had similar problems?

I've been here for about 6 months now.  When I joined I was roughly a 1800 player.  I'm now a 1950 player.  That's not bad for 6 months considering the starting rating.

The best thing about chess.com is that the community is VERY friendly.  I throw a challenge out to a 2400 player and the odds are, despite my rating, he'll accept it and we'll end up on each others friends list soon after.  You'll never see that anywhere else.

Hi, OTB is over the board chess -your traditional way to play.  And the USCF is the United States Chess Federation.  I am not sure what the equivalent is in Germany but I am sure you have one.

  As to whether our chess.com rating translates to OTB is an interesting question. In OTB, the board is different, as is the setting (sitting across from a person not a screen!), no analysis screen, and a ticking clock. I imagine my OTB rating will be a lot lower (have gone from 1400s to 1700s in six months) but - for sure - it would be MUCH higher because of chess.com.

I have a couple of friends who are 1800 USCF players and they estimate that ratings here tend to be about 200 points higher than USCF for comparable skill.  So, I was certain I would clean up that <1200 class and win a prize.  Imagine my shock when I lost my first match to a 1050 rated 9 year old.
