For a long time the caro-kann has been my default opening against e4, but I fear I may need to give it up. Here's why:

In two tournaments in the last month I was involed in four games with this. Every time White had a won position from the opening (A blunder in the middlegame caused White to lose in the end). I was Black in 3 games, and White in one.

Though it looks, to say the least, over ambitious, the plan is solid. Espceially considering that White normally will be forced to trade his Bishop for Knight to stop the Knight form getting to e5. Here is the game where I was White.

As you can see it is quite potent. I have as yet not found a refutation for it, so I was wondering if anyone else had come across it, and how the game went. I've only been able to find a handful of games online, and none played by good players.

However, if you do come across it, here's how I recomend playing. I Think it is sufficient to allow Black to survive.

i dont understand why 9...Bxf3 when 0-0 seems more logical, although in all fairness there may be long term reprecartions with a 9...0-0. but still....

Go to the above site.  There are 24 games from your initial position (8.O-O) dating from 1963 through 2000.  Score for the 24 games is 8-6-11.  Just from that I don't see this as a big threat to your favorite.  Take a look at all of the games.

After c3 I usually play e5. Had some interesting games with it!

No need for White to go into the Exchange variation proper anymore now that 2. Nf3 d5  3. exd5 cxd5 4. Ne5 has gotten traction.
