Confused about the Fried Liver Attack - how do the tactics work?

    Basically, after 9.a3? Nxc2+ 10.Kd1 Nxa1 11.Nxd5 Qh4! white's only chance to somehow survive is by 12.Nb6+! Ke7 13.Nxc8+! Rxc8 14.d3.

    Of course he has insufficient compensation for the sacrificed material, but at least his pieces can coordinate. The endgame after 12.Nxc7+ Kd7 13.Qf7+ Qe7 is simply lost.

    Not bad, necessarily, but 6.d4 is just better. It doesn't matter how white does in the FLA as long as he does better in the lolli.
