Dilemma:Ruy Lopez or Italian game

    Unless you're a GM it's entirely a matter of taste. If you are a bloodthirsty player the Italian should fit you better (the ancient c3-d4  lines are really sharp and difficult to face for an unprepared black amateur, although with correct play white has absolutely nothing). If you like to slowly build up your position, you might consider eirther the ruy or the "modern" italian lines with c3-d3.

    Play them both! There's no reason to play only one opening. And what variayions do you intend to play. There's the old open Italian (c3, d4) and the modern game where white plays d3. c3 and Nd2. They're both very interesting. You haven't really decided on the character of the game on move 3
