I played this variation of the Giuoco Piano, involving 7.Kf1, in a recent chess.com game - it did not go well! Even though I somehow won the game in the end, that was no thanks to my opening play. Can anyone tell me what I did wrong here? And is the variation any good? Thanks.
After 7. b-g4, bxf7 wins a pawn...I don't have the time to deeply analyze the position but white seems to have the edge....
Instead black probably should have played n-f6 and best for white seems to be q-d3 or b-d3 and just intuitiion tells me black is slightly. better. With q-d3 whites pawns will be bad(doubled on bfile) and with the bishop move you are developing a piece which has already been moved(although it is to a decent square)
erikido23 is right 8.Bxf7+ Kxf7 9.Ng5+, with 10.Qxg4 looks good for white
Black should have played 7...d5. I would not recommend playing this line as white
I'm no expert but would 9. Qa4 also be a decent continuation?
7. Nc3 is suggested in in MCO-15, and it seems a lot more accurate to me than 7. Kf1?!.
Wow. A bunch of players with real ratings talking about the Piano!
I'm basicaly a noob (haven't played for 30 years), and decided to study it because it's the oldest opening in the book.
And how do you pronounce Giuoco? I keep calling it Gekko or Guido (you know, Vinney's Mob boss cousin!).
Thanks for the info. It gives me more to study.
