Does anyone have a good Grünfeld defence book or any good theory source on this openning?

Thanks!!

Good thread. I was playing some KID and ...I dunno, I just keep finding myself opening 3. d5. I looked into the Grunfeld a bit and am going to give it some study/play.

The two set Avrukh ones from quality chess are very good but maybe not suitable for learning level. The one from Delchev from chess stars is more positional, and more explanation. Both assumes quite advanced knowledge but then don't think the whole opening is for beginners really.

I think theoretically currently the best is: https://chess24.com/en/learn/advanced/video/the-gruenfeld-according-to-svidler/introducing-the-gruenfeld

However please note that this is 1800+ and rather complex. There are many lines and variations.

Chess Developments:  The Grunfeld goes heavily into all of the main stream lines.

An excellent resource for all the odd ball sidelines, like 5.Na4, 5.Bd2, or 10.Rc1 in the Exchange Variation, would be "Chess Explained: The Grunfeld" from GAMBIT Publishing.

What IMHO makes these two better than the GM Repertoire book is that they are both objective rather than getting a one-sided view.  It is just as important for Black to understand what is wrong with certain ideas as it is having a set of "correct" lines.  Also, if one of the lines suddenly became refuted, you'd have nowhere to go with the GM Repertoire book, but with these two, you would.

For example, in the 7.Bc4 Exchange, he covers the b6 ideas, Bd7 ideas (with and without Bg4 f3), Qc7 ideas, etc.  The GM Repertoire will give you one of those lines.

The GM Repertoire has been given positive reviews.  Not knocking the books, but I just think a more objective approach is best.  Allows you to judge which lines you feel are best for your situation.

I have 2 books on the Gruenfeld , both very old .  I guess I need something newer since I have been playing a lot of them recently .

For the last couple of years when I play 1 d4 I get gruenfelds about 50% of the games , its very popular here and I also play it as black quite a lot when facing 1 d4 .

Reb - If you also play the White side of it, all the more reason to get Chess Developments:  The Grunfeld.
