I'm playing back, doing my usual center-counter, when I'm hit with a line that I hadn't seen before.

What lines can I play after 4. Qa4? I'm hesitant to play Qb6, afraid I may end up with doubled-and isolated-b pawns. Should I just ignore his play and open up the center with e5?

I like the idea of 4. ... e5. You might prefer 4. ... e6 because then you really attack his pawn. Not sure if 4. ... e6 5. dxc6 leaves you unhappy with your e-pawn or not.

I take it you have a book on the center counter and this isn't in it. Do you have a computer program you can analyze with?

I think e5 or e6 will work white should take the e pawn either way. 5.dxc6 Nxc6 just helps you develop a piece.

I think you should have played 3...e6 rather than 3...c6. I believe it is called the Icelandic gambit? Anyhow, it is what I play in this situation with success so far.

I think I would play 4...e5.  :)  If he does another capture then you develop another piece.  :)
