White has a passed a-pawn, but Black has active pieces (including the Dragon on g7) and an impressive, harmonious pawn chain. Is the Benko a respected 2700+ GM weapon, or is it just slightly dubious?
I'm sure it is sound and that you would need to be playing at a very high level to have problems that would make you question it's soundness.
I found 50 games in my database of 2500+ vs 2500+ from this exact position. (Different method of reaching it though at GM level for reason I don't know yet.) It scored 20 wins for white-5 wins for black-25 draws.
I found only one game of 2700+ vs. 2700+ of this variation. Kramnik vs. Topalov Kramnik won as white.
Many people have said, if it is dubious, it is playable.
True, but why give yourself an inferior position? It's irrational, like playing the Budapest or something for an online chess game.
If your opponent isn't strong enough to take advantage of the position then the risk becomes negligible.
I would say playing it live with any sort of decent time control and you would be fine. Probably to be avoided in correspondence play though. Probably be fighting for a draw as black.
Agreed. Unless you are a real expert in the Benko, avoid online or correspondence. But it's certainly playable OTB/live at amateur levels. White has to fight for his activity, it is very easy to get passive and in this case Black has good compensation.
