The bit that irritates me about this post is that both of blacks suggested moves (1...b3 and 1...a4) are impossible. If you're going to try to fool people, do it right! Smile

Uh, it's April Fools, guys. 1.g4 is not the best opening for White; and nothing under the sun scores 72% when played properly and countered properly.

I’ve been playing 1.g4 from time to time for years. It can be fun if you don’t mind losing occasionally. One otb game against a 1600 ran: 1.g4 Nf6 2.g5 d5 3.gxf6 Resigns...I didn't understand it either but a point is a point.

Yeah, I've never understood why more people don't call it the Spike. That always sounded cooler to me.

His engine failed to see that the knight was being attacked.

Lovely thought but English IM Michael Basman has been playing it for at least 8 years.

And, Polish GM Michael Krasenkow has used it on move 4 in the Nimzo-English for years.  You might also do a search under the name Keres just out of a sense of historical interest in russian chess.

Basman's been playing the Grob for 30 years.

Although Kasparov could most likely beat nearly anyone with this(or any move) I doubt we will see any but a handful of mavericks playing this.  I have no fear of facing it.  I hope it catches on!!

It is hard to believe that Kasparov's team would ever claim neural nets as 'cutting edge'; highly hyped in the 90s, benchmarking has many times proved that much more efficient approaches exist (e.g., boosting) and NNs are now considered antique in computational intensive analysis.

It is however interesting that the research of IQCCC (International Q-Bit ChessCloud Consortium) points in the same direction: 1.g4 is indeed currently considered as being most promising candidate in their search for  the 'Forced White Win'.

it makes makes sense! its a direct kingside attack right from the opening, white's intentions is obvious, aggressive straightforward attack!!!

White's second move should be 2. f3.  Unstoppable.

Every April Fool's day, chess websites will post ridiculous articles. I remember there was one about the King's Gambit being a forced win for Black(unless White plays Be2, in that case it's a forced draw).

Really, even if 1.g4 was White's best opening move, practically it will never amount to anything.

I'm glad you remembered that, seeing as how it was a few weeks ago.
