the modern variation:1 e4 e52 f4 d53 ed ef4 nf3 nf6is still a rather safe and secure path to equalize with black as 4. Bc4 has now been pretty much refuted (see: chess publishing website and afformentioned shaw tome)
counterintuitively, in order to play the kings gmabit with success today as white one must be an endgame afficianado as the never ending march of chess theory shows black several viable methods to equalizeit is white that need search new ideas, not blackas black, why try reinvent a wheel when a perfectly round one already exists
I remember Nigel Short asking a player who lost against the king's gambit how he could lose when Black has so many ways to equalise.
equality does not mean drawn !!lots of room for either player to cook up dangerous things in the king's gambit tread lightly
