New ideas in the 1...e5 English

These ideas are related in that they both involve an early ...Be7

First, I discovered the following by letting my engine run while playing through some very early moves, I posted on it earlier this year, here goes again:

    After 1. c4 e5  2. g3 d6  3. Bg2 f5  4. d4 exd4  5. Qxd4 or very similarly 1. c4 e5  2. Nc3 d6  3. g3 f5  4. d4 exd4  5. Qxd4

Black has the hitherto unplayed (according to megabase) 5...Be7 since 6. Qxg7?meets with 6...Bf6 when has minimal chances of surviving beginning with 7. Bh6.  What makes the tactics with ...Be7/Qxg7?/...Bf6 possible is the presence of White's pawn on g3 precluding the retreat Qg3; if White hasn't played g3, this won't work.

Or after 1. c4 e5  2. Nc3 or 2. g3, Black has the immediate 2...Be7; there are only a couple dozen games in megabase, and after 2. Nc3 Be7  3. g3 or 2. g3 Be7  3. Bg2, Black even has 3...h5!?  I came up with this idea after I saw a friend of mine play 1...e6 and 2...Be7 vs. the English.  Interestingly, one of the games in megabase is by an opponent of mine from 35 years ago, Joe Shipman (son of IM Walter Shipman), when we were school boys in New York -- he beat my Birds opening with From's Gambit.
