It will probably end up being named after

A. Some grandmaster who played a few brilliant games with it

B. Someone who analyzes the opening and develops the theroy behind it.

And I doubt that there are many (if any) openings that haven't already been named.

Certainly. However, I think the chess world will only go along with a claim to a new opening if you subject this opening to deep analysis and prove that it is sound.

If you ever develop a new opening, please give it a fun name such as the Orangutan, the Hippo, the Pterodactyl or the Frankenstein-Dracula! It's so much more exciting then "the John Doe opening"! Smile

Creating a new opening isn't impossible even in this day and age, and it doesn't have to be something really original.  Try taking a current opening and find a new variation for it and then back it up with a highly analysed theory behind it.

eg; Sicilian Defence - Dragon Variation (already been done)                                                                    Sicilian Defence - Najdorf Variation (already been done)                                                                    Sicilian Defence - Gorilla Counter-Attack Variation (new variation that strikes fear and confuses even the greatest of GMs...)

lol  Tongue out
