This one is new to me, I think. What is it? Unfortunately, the game was interrupted by dinner. I wasn't happy since I was a little ahead. I'm hoping to get some ideas about how it was played.
Every now & then you just find someone who is interested in "getting out of book". It looks like that d6/c6/b5 defensive system with the K-side disruption added on. Since it's unlikely to show up again, don't worry about it.
I know about the f-pawn, but with their queen and dark bishop blocked in, I wasn't worried about it yet. Since I was just grabbing up space, maybe 3. c4 would have been better. I think the biggest mistake I made was actually my action with that knight and bishop. 10... Qa5+ would have hurt, and I noticed it right after I did it. I castled right away because of that.
I think I would have won if I didn't have to leave. They've only played a few games by the looks of it, and only won the one against me. I'm betting their pawn crawl and not noticing the queen fork is evidence that they're very new. Then again, my confidence has been very low recently and I've been losing more often than not and my tactics rating is falling. I don't know what's up.
3 f4 doesn't help White, you should just develop a Knight, probably 3 Nc3 is best playing assuming Black will enter a Caro-Kann with 3 ...d5 and the weakening ...h5 thrown in. When he doesn't, all the better.
Also 5 h3 is useless and weakening, why would you play such a move? White has no fear of ...Bg4 and Bxf3 later. Don't waste time with pawn moves that weaken your position and "prevent" moves you should welcome. Similarly a3 is worthless, unless your opponent blunders as he did. Just play Bd3, and if he pushes the Knight Ne2 helps cover the weak squares you made on the Kingside, and he still isn't developing properly.
Nxb5 is a nice looking move. Qa5+ doesn't quite work either because of Nc3.
Nxb5 meant that Nc3 isn't possible, unless you meant Qa5+ instead of capturing with the pawn. What I mean by Qa5+ is that it would have won the bishop.
Is this a good training routine?
