In the original diagram there is also a forced mate in 3: 20. Qc4 Ka5 Bc2+ etc.

Yeah, 9.Qe1 nets a piece for nothing.

6...e5 is the way Black should not play in these positions: after simply 6...e6 this is a queen's gambit exchange in reverse, where the bishop will be very clumsily posted on g2.
