The "best" opening, IMO,  is the one that is most likely to produce a middlegame that you understand and enjoy playing.  GM Lajois Portisch once wrote (I'm probably paraphrasing here), "the goal of the opening is to reach a playable middlegame."

I like the Ruy Lopez as white.

Sicilian as Black, though, for sharp chances at gaining initiative.

Exactly. Totally agree. I would only add that another plus would be if it is NOT understood nor enjoyed by the opponent, at the same time. That would promote errors on their part.  }8-)

Generally, I like entering the book lines for 1. e4 . There is only 1 opening that is actually a challenge for e4, and that is the sicilian. If you look on the database , other responses to e4 are far more better for white. With d4 or c4, there are not as many "statistically better" lines. This is only my opinion and it should not be considered accepting to you for any means because I base my repetriore on statistics and databases, but others don't really care on that and just play what they want.

I changed my mind ... the Best opening is the one with Anand sitting behind it. The Worst opening, is the one with Topalov sitting across the table from me

I'd hate to burst your bubble, but there is no best opening. Otherwise everyone would play it. What opening you play depends on what you like.
