What are the most popular openings for grandmasters? just curious.

For white, I think the Ruy Lopez.

For black, I think the Sicilian.

I doubt Ruy Lopez is the most played as white, if Sicilian is the most played as black though. Laughing

The Najdorf and Sveshnikov are probably the most popular. As far as the ruy goes, the marshall and berlin are quite common if black is content with a draw. If he wants more he will probably play one of the many lines in the closed ruy. I am not sure of any of this, I am just going by what I have seen in top level games recently.
