I recently played a game as black where white played an opening I had never seen before and when I went into an opening database could not find the move he played on move 6. Needless to say he crushed me early, what would you have responded with in this position?

6.c3 looks like an attempt to get a broad pawn center, but they are really targets for you. After 6.c3 exd4 7.cxd4 c5 you strike the center and start undermining the pawn. I wouldn't expect 7.Qxd4 since that pretty much ends the attacking.

    cxd4, cxd4, exf3 (state: "yum"), Nxf3, Bg4... I love gobbling pawns up :p

Sometimes it lands me in trouble though ^^
