The move pirc defense starts up with: 1.e4 d6 2.d4 Nf6

I think watching chess videos about this opening theory is a good idea.

It's a hypermodern opening where you allow white to create a large pawn center and then attack it by fianchettoing your king's bishop and playing for a well timed central counterbreak with c5 or e5.  Another setup involves placing pawns on c6 and d6 when you will play for queenside expansion with b5 and maybe b4 displacing white's knight on c3 which holds his center together.  A common theme for black is preventing or delaying white's central advance e5.  This is the point of playing d6 which controls this square.

Join the Pirc Defence Group. We'd be happy to have you. There is a link on my profile I think. If you enjoy playing the Pirc then the Vote chess and Forum Discussions can really help with improvement as I know from first hand experience Smile

    1. e4 d6 is strictly Pirc, but you could also play 1.e4 g6 and play Pirc, risking transpositions to KID, Sicilian Dragon, etc.

e4 d6 is better than e4 g6 IMO.  Less theory to learn If you are going for a pirc.
