White can play 17 O-O-O!!  and also  8 Rg1!! is better

Brian I do not unerstand the 8. Rg1!! idea at all.

Expertise87

I have a game where my opponent played Nxf2 and got a lost position but on 7.Qd5 he played 7...Qe7! and there I am convinced White can get no more than a small edge and this may be a fine way for Black to play. He blundered several times afterwards though.

ponz111

oh sorry, Black in the above game was F Caruana

ponz111

Fabiano Caruana is, of course, a very strong player. If he is in some trouble after his 6th move as Black and is in very deep trouble soon after his 6th move [as Black] it is a good indication that the Ponziani can be played at very high levels.

And for any player rated 2300 or less--it can be a very good opening [if he learns some of the theory]. Smile

ponz111

The current World Champion once played the Ponziani [and won of course]

For 99% of the players--why play the Ruy Lopez which requires ten times as much learning of opening theory as to learn the Ponziani?

If Caruana cannot defend against the Ponziani--your likely opponents may also have a hard time defending against the Ponziani!?Laughing

Here is a vote chess game ended a few months back. Easy to find the best moves in vote chess when you have 3 days for one move plus a whole team working together...

The Chess Mine was White...

Opening Ponziani  Frasier Variation  [this is the most complicated of all

Ponziani variations...]

Impossible to play like that OTB! Nevertheless a gem!

ponz111

Well, it helped that I was well versed on that opening variation. Laughing\

But you are correct, it is much easier to come up with a master piece in vote chess than it is over-the-board...

zborg

Fascinating game, with a knockout blow (and imminent resignation) in less than 35 moves.  Black apparently made a number of technical errors, but they were so subtle the vote chess people (apparently) couldn't find them.

Great Game, PONZ.  Now if only those boneheads in the "Chess is a Draw with Best Play" thread would sit up and listen to you.  Hope Springs Eternal.  happy.png

Beautiful one. I think that line is too risky to play otb, but fine in mail chess.

What if, after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.c3 Nf6 4.d4 Nxe4 5.d5 Bc5 6.dxc6 Bxf2+ 7.Ke2, black plays bxc6 instead of Bb6? What is white best continuation?
