Problems I have with the queen's pawn opening (d4)

Everytime I play a Queen's pawn opening (or my opponent plays it) I have a hard time know what exactly to do. I mostly see--and play--King's Indian, QGD, and a Nimzo-Indian type of opening (or one that transposes into a Gunfeld) but I really am having a hard time understanding principles of the opening, and really what to do in general. Any advice would help. Thanks

what opening do you primarily strive to play as either side? which openings are you struggling with most? and can you throw out a couple of examples? asking for help on the first move of the game is vague, seeing as after only one move the game is still EXTREMELY open-ended

Really both. I've been trying to adopt something besides 1.e4.

If your looking for some advice on how to play the King's Indian as black, check out this gem. It's a very instructive lesson on the common themes in the King's Indian for Black, and what to avoid as White.

if your looking for a different first move, try Nf3. It's flexible, and strong
