My favourite opening as white is the queens gambit. This is because I think controll of the center is very important and the material often gets even anyway.

My question is, what do you think of the queen's gambit. Do you think it is effective, like I do. Please explain why.

Yep. 1.d4 player for fifteen years, so I must love the queen's gambit. I have a massive plus score against the QGD, Slavs a bit less.

If you are playing against QG, why is Slav or SemiSlav better than orthodox defense?  What would you play for black against Colle' system?

i find the slav the hardest to play against when i'm using the QG (my preferred opening). i find that it gives black the best chance at equality in the opening (hence, it is my choice for black against the QG). orthodox defense is probably my second choice, but i find it a lot more difficult for black to play effectively.

 The queen's gambit is:

white          black

1.d4            d5

2.c5

Then black can either accept or decline the gambit. When I'm black, I decline it by playing c6.

Arnold Denker used the QG as a VERY nasty attacking weapon, H.N. Pilsbury also kick butt with it on occasion...nowdays its considered more of a positional opening...ive been playing it almost exclusivly for like 12-15 years ...i love it!  i have troubles with the slav variations but QGA (queens gambit accepted) on the other hand is my favorite to play against!  black always tries to hard to keep his pawn (at my level of play anyway) and i get to build a powerful position...

I've also stopped playing 1. e4 mainly because I don't fancy playing against the sicilian and have gotten bored with Ruy Lopez lines. 1. d4 also gives possibility to play king's indian as well as nimzo-indian which is my absolute favourite.

QG is the best opening ever!! Both black and white. In white there are lot of interetsting variations "Classical" is one of them. By black I like to play Tartakower variation.

Here is one of my game (Tartakower) which I have played against strong player in Lahti Chess Club Championship tournament in 2008. I think that I had advantage in endgame, but draw agreed.

In this game you see how black break the center, ofcourse white makes some passive moves in game. Comments are welcome!!
