I am past the point where I can get by on opening principles alone. Opponents of my level are booked up. As Black, my task of building a repertoire seems very manageable. As White, however, one has to be ready to play against a large number of defenses. I am an e4 player, so there are the ...e5 openings, Sicilian, Caro-Kann, French, Pirc/Modern, Scandinavian, Alekhine's, etc.
I don't see myself taking the lazy way out and using King's Indian Attack or Colle. It seems that closed, positional openings are less work, but I would like to continue to explore more tactical openings. I guess there is no substitute for putting in the work. However, if anyone can offer advice on putting together a repertoire for White, I would greatly appreciate it. Examples of your own repertoire for White would be good to have for reference. Thanks in advance.
I am personally rated about 1700 OTB, so I don't know how much this will help you. I am also a Scotch Gambit player.
There really isn't anything to do other than learn the lines. Be on the lookout for TNs you can play. Take your opponent out of their book and into yours with solid moves. You don't always have to play the main line, find a variation that fits your style and you may score significantly better.
