I playing this as Black unless White plays 5. d3 instead of the "standard" 0-0 then it becomes a free for all but I can not find good studies or game notes on this variation. Any advice will be appreciated.

I believe every Ruy Lopez book has some references to Archangel, there are also couple of books devoted only to archangel

Everything you read in opening books is subject to the author's prejudices and objectives.
Better to study games from a current database, and see how strong players play the game not only through the opening, but the middlegame, which plans work and which don't and which are the most dangerous for both sides, and right down to the endings, so you can see the whole game. Don't just play over the wins for your side - play over them all, so you can see what loses for your side, too.
Do that, and play it frequently and record the games, comparing them to the database to see where your play departs from the strong players'. You will learn much more about the opening this way than from any book.
Everything depends on what do you want to achieve, and what is your current chess knowledge.
By using databases, you'd have to learn yourself why certain move is good, and why is bad(even if its not immediately refuted), so there will be a lot of self learning there.
You'd have to know something about the opening already in order to catch some ideas and plans just by looking at the games.
If you want a quicker path with guide along the way, nothing can beat a good book IMO.
Of course that every book is not the same, therefore you should browse the relevant forums, and ask other players what book they recommend.
