When playing the ruy lopez, after reaching this position is it preferrable for white to take the knight and double black's pawns, or save the bishop?
I did it wrong, it is obviously black to move
I beleive either is playable
I believe at higher levels white usually tries to retain his white square bishop which ends up helping defend e4. However, the Exchange Variation is perfectly playable - just remember grabbing the pawn with the knight is bad!
Why is that bad?
black doesnt recapture with "b" pawn, but with "d" pawn.
