Seems like a lot of pawn wall attacks against the games I have recently played with this. Have I missed something in my 30 plus/minus years away from the game? Anyone want to study possibilities with me on this classic, and simple opening?

I'm sorry, i have trouble understanding the questionEmbarassed do you mean that black often went for a pawnstorm attack in your recent games? That's very uncommon.

The main thing that happened it the last 30 years in the ruy is that the Berlin defence (3...Nf6 4.0-0 Nxe5)  rose from the status of "very easy += for white" to "rock solid mainline".

The formerly common open defence (3...a6 4.Ba5 Nf6 5.0-0 Nxe4) instead entered a period of trouble after Kasparov unleashed a strong novelty in his match against Anand; however it looks like black has solved his problems and the variation is rising again in popularity. Time will tell.

You will also find that the Schielmann (3...f5) is not the bad defence which was once considered. It's the third most common alternative at move 3 in GM games, and right now black is doing well (but he really needs to know some theory to avoid an early disaster).

3...b5 4.Bb3 Bc5 is also seen more often, mainly thanks to shirov's efforts. A very sharp and risky line.

Thanks.  Interesting to play out these options.
