Just use reasoning. The shorter the game the more likely it would be that it has a mirror. You know "fool's mate," I'm sure. That's a chess game. How many times do you think it's been played? Just once? What about Scholar's Mate? etc. etc.

It's very reasonably to think that many miniatures has been duplicated many times... or rather, to me, it would be unreasonable to believe otherwise.

This is why professional chess players stay so on top of openings and new games played, so that last week's novelty doesn't catch them unawares too. All too often the player more up to date with his knowledge wins in familiar lines, because a novelty has been played somewhere in the world and an existing understanding of a position is priceless in competitive chess.. especially when time limits come into play.

Copycats usually happen when one person knows the line and the other person doesn't.

has it ever been known 2 go down 2, king 2 king left on the board, i cannot ever see that happening.

You would be describing a draw due to insufficient material. It does happen but often the draw will be decided upon before such a position is reached as it is forseeable.

Game 13 of the Leko Kramnik match in 2004 is a famous game where it went down to K v K. Drawn obviously. A very exciting game.

there is an example of a very complicated position that arose in 2 seperate GM games with colours reversed . but not same moves. One missed a complicated win, the other found it. No knowledge of the other game. I'll find it and post it under 'same position' unless anyone else knows it
