I wanted to know your opinion on this opening. I`ve been playing it a few times (its probably the only opening i know for black), and im a bit dissapointed.

I dont get the feel its so good... I know most games I lose are because of the middlegame or endgame, but this opening is not as fun as i thought, there are I think much more traps that white can set than black... i find it to be a bit too passive.

Also, the pawn on d4 always ends up turning into a fucking monster. I have to say I like white a lot more on this opening and Im thinking of changing to the French as black :D

I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Try Ruy Lopez...all chess players that consider themself as that should know that.

maybe thats why i dont like playing it... cos everyone knows how the lines go and u end up playing a lot of similar games

The Ruy Lopez is drawish? No, it isn't. Try the Marshall 'attack w/black, and with white pieces, try to get a Kingside attack. I thought there was a good game not too long ago on white in a Ruy Kingisde attack.

Well the Scandanavian is an exciting opening full of tactics and is generally an open position. It is far from passive if played correctly.

The French on the other hand is about as passive as it comes. It is a lovely little defence, but not what you play if you want an opening which isn't "kinda boring".

I advise you try playing the scandanavian 2...Nf6 variation. So 1.e4 1...d5 2.PxP 2...Nf6. This avoids getting your queen chased around the board. Of course this is just my personal preference.

i actually played a game as white vs a 2...Nf6 and i was quite surprised at how strong it appeared.

I might give that one a try.

I know the scandinavian is supposed to be quite active, but i mean passive as in u depend so much on white`s moves... i dunno, i guess theres something im missing

the problem with opening books is that they dont really explain so well the strategic idea behind it. Of course u will get it if u go through the 100 analysed games it has... but i mean... i just rather spend that time learning the middlegame (which i think is more important)

Play a Sveshnikov or an Accelerated Dragon if you want fun positions.

For a sicilian repertoire i would advise you the Sicilian Dragon and the Najdorf.although nowadays the Dragon is considered slightly inferior, but at 2300- it s perfectly playable.
