sicilian with 3.c4

Just yesterday I was wondering "hey, what would be wrong with 3.c4, and why nobody EVER played it against me?"

Funnily enough, today I play a live game 15|10 and I get just that!

And I'm now in the Maroczy bind. I need to know how to play it if I'm a sicilian player, it can come up even with other variations...but I would really like to play an open sicilian.

Knowing the reputation of the Maroczy, why isn't 3.c4 used more often? Wouldn't it be the ultimate anti-sicilian?

Check Carlsen-Jones from the London Chess Classic. He just played it later.

This is certainly playable, though I wouldn't call it an open Sicilian, especially if Black plays 3...e5 Wink

Yes, I meant to say that white can in fact avoid the open sicilian with the move in question.

I've had some games (even against strong players) in which white chose the setup with pawns on c4, e4, and d3...and me eventually going symmetrical with c5, e6 and e5. I should be happy that as black I've stopped d4 forever, but I don't really like to play such a lifeless position :P
