Slav defence help

Hello everybody!

I have a little problem with the slav defence.

I know these two lines, and this is why I am in trouble.

But the first position is the "combination" of the other two positions, and I do not know what to play. I do not want a semi-slav defence.

This is a good move order for your opponent if he is willing to allow a Semislav but not a pure Slav.  Here are your choices, basically (none of these play like anything like a pure Slav):

  • 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 dxc4 (don't get lured by 3...e5, it is bad)
  • 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e3 g6
  • 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e3 a6

I play 3...dxc4. Then 4.a4 e5 is a nice equalizing line, although you could just play Nf6 and head back into normal Slav positions.

Right, it's important to know that 4.a4 is lame on account of 4...e5, however 4.e4 is critical.  After 4.e4 b5 5.a4 b4, OP needs to know how to play against both 6.Na2 and 6.Nb1.  Not sure what the current theory on this is but I believe Black does decently.
